Earlier, he had been a general in the Royal Danish Army as well as the Danish Governor-General of Norway. He was unmarried and childless which caused a scramble to find an additional new heir to the throne since King Carl's and Queen Charlotte's children both had died in infancy. Conspiracy theories about his death caused Sweden's Marshal of the Realm to be lynched and brutally assassinated by an angry Stockholm mob during his funeral procession.
