Joseph was a son of George and Christina (Manneman) Stangl. He was raised in the Mount Carmel community and attended the local school.
He married Anna Loneman November 10, 1916 at St. Francis Church in Maple River.
The couple operated general stores in Breda and Lidderdale before moving in 1935 to Carroll.
Joseph worked at Brenny's market as a butcher before retiring.
They were parents of Myra, Vincent, Alton, LaVonne, Ralph, Ivan and Joan.
