Harvey County Kansas marriage records confirm that Julia Shacklett, age 18 (should be age 17) and George W. McMurry, age 32, applied for their marriage license on March 4, 1879 and were married in Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas on March 24, 1879. George was the 4th of 10 children of James A. McMurry (1817-1887) and Elizabeth Moore (1818-1883) of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania who are buried in their family plot at here at Star Cemetery with their daughters Nancy King and Melissa VanNatten.
Juliet Shacklett was born in Meade County, Kentucky and was the daughter of William Kendall Shacklett and Ann R. Wimp. Confederate soldier Capt. William K. Shacklett was killed on April 29, 1863 during the "Meadville Skirmish" in Meade County, Kentucky during the Civil War.
Ann R. (Wimp) Shacklett next married Blant D. Shacklett (Blant was a distant cousin of W. K. Shacklett), therefore the unusual inscription on Juliet McMurry's headstone regarding her parentage: "Juliet wife of George McMurry and dau. of A. R. & W. K. & B. D. Shacklett, born March 12, 1862, died January 9, 1880."
Further information lists: Lulie T. McMury (misspelling), age 17, born in KY., died Jan. 1880 of pneumonia.
(Source: Kansas 1880 Mortality Schedule, Ronald Vern Jackson, 1979, p. 114.)
A further important note is that following Juliet's death, George W. McMurry married Elizabeth Kile on Jan. 3, 1884 in Burrton, Kansas and moved to Oklahoma where they are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Dewey County, yet two fieldstones (with no inscriptions) located on each side of Juliet are obviously intended to represent headstones for people buried in the same lot. Kansas Death Certificates for Juliet's parents show that they are buried at Star Cemetery, Harvey Co., Kansas. However, Star Cemetery records indicate that Juliet's parents do not have a burial lot listed in their name, so this writer concludes that the markers on either side of Juliet are her parent's headstones (Blant D. Shacklett and Ann R. Wimp).
