Inscription
Sacred to the memory of William Green, who was barberrously murdred in the execution of his duty as Cunstable on the 20th day of August 1826 aged 25 years.
Musing with pious thought and heav'nly care,
Let this remind the reader to prepare !
lnstantly snatch'd, by murder, to the grave;
Shun ye the world, and hail the power can save !
As the fond Ivy doth the Yew embrace,
In country church-yards, at another place;
Emblem of faith ! so let my tomb be seen,
The pious token of that "EVER GREEN !"
