He lived with his elderly grandmother Sally Jane Schoonover Cummings in Troupsburg, NY for a time. Her husband George Cummings had died in the Civil War. It appears, according to some family members, that Ernest went from Hornell, New York to Oklahoma between 1911-1915, leaving his wife, Tinna Carlin Tuller behind. Tinna later married George M. Church in 1916. He was a Railroad worker.

Ernest took a trip on the railroad from New York and very possibly died before the 1920 census in Oklahoma according to a distant cousin from Oklahoma.

"After my grandfather went West to join his father and brother George, my grandmother (Tinna) never heard from him again and for years afterword...She finally remarried to a first cousin of Ernest's by the name of George Church. So, he is the only grandfather I ever knew. He looked enough like my own grandfather to be his brother, though. Ernest left my father and his brother, Basil, from Hornell (N.Y.), my dad said. Dad was only 3 years old. From SHIRLEY TULLER COLBURN." (now deceased)
