Navy Officer Graduated from Central High School in 1930

Another graduate of Waseca's Central High school and the father of two small children paid the supreme sacrifice, giving his life for his country in the fighting that took place at sea when American forces made the invasion of the Philippines. He is Lieut. James Dunn, 32 son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Dunn of Winona and former Residents of this city. Word of his death came to the family in a telegram received on Saturday evening. In it the Navy department stated that Lt. Dunn died of wounds received in battle and that he had been buried at sea with full military honors, It stated further that additional information would be sent by mail.
Lt. Dunn has seen two and half years of service in the Navy. For two years he has been stationed in the Southwest Pacific. He has gained two promotions since being commissioned and Ensign.
His exact duties aboard ship were never clearly described by him although he wrote home frequently asking his folks to purchase magazines containing articles which described the fighting where he has been. His last letter was received four weeks ago.
James Dunn was born in Waseca April 20. 1912. During his high school days he devoted all his spare time to business ventures of his own and while attending school he was serving as Manager of the Marigold Ice Cream company branch here. Following his graduation in 1930 he attended the Rochester Junior College for two years and it was during those college days that he met Miss Alice Moore, the girl who was later to become his wife. He continued his college work at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in1934. He found employment at Oklahoma City, where he worked for a an investment brokerage firm until called to the service.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Judy, age 7, and Jimmmy, age 4 who have made their home with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. P.J. Moore at Rochester, since their husband and father has been in the service. He leaves his parents Mr. and Mrs. James R. Dunn who have lived in Winona for the past 10 years; two sister , Mrs. Mel (Catherine) Welch of Morristown and Mrs. Marion (Helen) Warmack of Mansfield, Ohio and a brother, Lt. Richard Dunn of the Army Air Corps. Richard only recently returned from Italy where he completed 50 mission over enemy territory. He was to have returned to duty this week Monday but was granted a 10 day extension when word was received of his brother's passing
Memorial services are being held at Rochester this afternoon at four o'clock from the First Congregational church.
