Jack Edwin Hill, “Coach Hill”, 79, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Lake View Elderly Care. Jack was born December 11, 1936 in Granger, Utah, to William Delbert Hill and Thelma May Carlisle. He married Anne Schofield on June 7, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they have 6 children.
Jack grew up on the family farm which was homesteaded by his grandfather. He graduated from Cyprus High School and attended Westminster College on a football scholarship. After serving an LDS mission in Northern California, he attended BYU where he earned BS and MS degrees. In 1963, he began his 40-year teaching and coaching career at Pleasant Grove High School. For 15 years, Jack taught U.S. History, Health, Boys P.E. and coached football, basketball and track. After taking a one-year sabbatical leave to study photography and graphic arts at BYU-Hawaii, he became the Yearbook Advisor at PGHS. For the next 25 years, he taught Photography, Graphic Arts, U.S. History and coached the Sophomore Football Team.
During those same years, he was a WAC football official. He officiated throughout America, working games at Notre Dame, Nebraska, Army, Navy, Air Force Academy, and other universities with rich football traditions. He was honored by being selected to officiate 7 major bowl games, including 3 Cotton Bowls. For several years, he was the oldest Division I college football official in America.
Jack was a dedicated gardener who planted his first very own garden at age 11. He loved “digging in the dirt, dragging irrigation pipes, but he did do a lot swearing at his lawn mower.
He was an accomplished photographer; his two favorite subjects were Mt. Timpanogos and the Mt. Timpanogos LDS Temple. He rarely left home without his camera, in case “his” mountain was “in a good light.” On some days, he drove to the temple several times to “catch” a particularly beautiful cloud formation or sky color which complimented the very “photogenic” building. Of course, grandchildren were often his subjects, too! He made and delivered hundreds of birthday cards which included prints of his best photos and a personal greeting. He also printed stacks of 8 x 10,’s which he gave away. His goal was for every person in his area to have a photo of a temple in their bedroom.
A highlight of his life was to serve as a historical-site missionary with his wife, Anne, in the Rochester New York Mission, which includes Palmyra, New York; the Hill Cumorah; and the Mary and Peter Whitmer Farm in Fayette, New York.
For 28 years, Jack enjoyed his calling as a Gospel Doctrine teacher. He was an expert at adding “historical context” to his lessons. He also served enthusiastically as a temple ordinance worker and as a Home Teacher right up to the time he needed professional health care at Lake View. For the next 18 months, he enjoyed a beautiful view of colorful sunsets, Utah Lake, and the Mt. Timpanogos Temple through a southwest, floor-to-ceiling window at Lake View.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Pleasant Grove Second Ward Chapel at 450 E 200 South, Pleasant Grove. Friends and family may attend a viewing Thursday evening from 6-8 at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East in Pleasant Grove and at the church on Friday from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
