Susan was the daughter of Benjamin and Catharine Smith Paulus. She was born in Windsor Township. She had three brothers: William Henry, Benjamin F. and Nathaniel, and two sisters: Sarah and Sophia. She was married to William Henry Hoffman on December 26, 1871 at the Duke Street M E Church by Rev. Penepacker. They were the parents of 10 children: Margaret Ellen, Charles Erbin; Ida Catherine; Winifred Milton, who died in infancy; Hattie Louise; William Henry Harrison; Annie May; Titus Leander, who died around two years of age; Elsie Mabel; and Erma Regina. Susan and William owned a home on South Charles Street in Dallastown, after the home they were living in in Jacobus was destroyed to build Lake Williams. Susan died at her home at 148 South Charles Street in Dallastown after 55 years of marriage to William Henry. There was a party on Charles Street in Dallastown for the couple when they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary attended by all their children and grandchildren.
