Ernest Hayward Wessman, 88, passed away on February 19, 2010 of causes incident to age.

He was born to Henry Richard Emmanuel and Hazel Jean Hayward Wessman on June 30, 1921 in Salt Lake City.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army a few months prior to World War II, served the early part of the war in Hawaii, and later served in Europe. After the war, he worked full-time for the Utah National Guard until his retirement in June 1976, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Ernie married Elaine Everett on March 22, 1947. Ernie was a fantastic husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and his family will always remember his devotion and love toward each family member.

Ernie and Elaine spent many wonderful winters with friends in Bahia Kino, Mexico and Casa Grande, Arizona; and also enjoyed many friendships while spending summers at Star Valley, Wyoming.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Ernie (Annette) Wessman of South Jordan, Mark (Martha) Wessman of Springfield, Virginia; Lynn (Laurel) Wessman of Arlington, Virginia; Laurie (Don) Kocherhans of South Jordan, Lee (Cheryl) Wessman of West Jordan, and Dan (Patricia) Wessman of Chesapeake, Virginia; twenty grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, brother, Keith (Lilly) Wessman, of Henderson, Nevada; and sister, Norinne Husbands, of Nephi. He was preceded in death by his parents and eleven brothers and sisters.

A brief graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah. Friends may call on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road (1700 West), Taylorsville.
