"Giant Powder Cap Trying"
"Last evening's Virginia Chronicle [Virginia City, Nevada] says: Alice, the ten-year-old daughter of Stephen and Alice Walsh, of Lower Gold Hill, met with a very severe accident a few days ago. While on her way to school, a school mate produced a box of giant powder caps, which with the pair began experimenting. An explosion followed, and poor little Alice Walsh had her arm badly cut. It is now reported that the physicians think it will be necessary to amputate the child's arm in order to save her life."
