Stephen Walsh was was born in the townland of TULLAMORE, Barony of Iraghticonnor, Civil Parish of Gale, Poor Law Union of Listowel, County KERRY, IRELAND.
He was baptized on January 7, 1837. His residence was listed as Tullabeg (a subtownland of Tullamore). His parents were Michael Walsh and Johanna McCarthy. (Sponsors were Daniel Walsh and Mary Walsh).
***
Stephen and his family immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1850's, immediately after the Famine, the Great Hunger, in Ireland.
Three of Stephen's brothers- Martin, John, and Edward-- settled in Moira, Franklin County, New York. Stephen was living there until 1856.
Stephen's brother William left New York state in 1856 for Wisconsin; Stephen went "West" the same year, in the Gold Rush.
*****
NOTE: STEPHEN WALSH WAS BORN IN 1837 IN IRELAND. ALL OF THE CENSUSES IN THE U.S. SAY HE WAS BORN ABOUT 1842. I DON'T KNOW IF HE PURPOSELY CLAIMED HE WAS YOUNGER THAN HE WAS WHEN HE WENT WEST, OR IF HE JUST DID NOT KNOW WHEN HE WAS BORN, WHICH WAS VERY TYPICAL OF THE IRISH OF THAT TIME. HE IS DEFINITELY THE STEPHEN BORN IN TULLAMORE, AND THAT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY MULTIPLE DNA MATCHES BETWEEN HIS DESCENDANTS AND HIS BROTHERS' DESCENDANTS.
