DEATH
April 10, 1885 in Benton, Mono County, California.
Stephen died in a terrible accident; he was killed when he fell into one of the pans of a quartz mill at Millner's Mill.
The pans were actually large steam operated rock crushers, used to crush to rocks which contained the silver.

"Mrs. Alice Bayles, 80, member of a pioneer Nevada family, died at her home in Oakland, California, June 22.
"Mrs. Bayles was born in Pioche, Nev., DAUGHTER OF THE LATE MR. AND MRS. STEPHEN SYLVESTER WALSH. Her father was an early day Nevada gold and silver miner, and the family lived in Gold Hill for many years. She had made her home in Oakland since 1914. . . "
He was baptized on January 7, 1837. His residence was listed as Tullabeg (a subtownland of Tullamore). His parents were Michael Walsh and Johanna McCarthy. (Sponsors were Daniel Walsh and Mary Walsh).

Stephen and his family immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1850's, immediately after the Famine, the Great Hunger, in Ireland.
Three of Stephen's brothers- Martin, John, and Edward-- settled in Moira, Franklin County, New York. Stephen was living there until 1856.
Stephen's brother William left New York state in 1856 for Wisconsin; Stephen went "West" the same year, in the Gold Rush.

I DON'T KNOW IF HE PURPOSELY CLAIMED HE WAS YOUNGER THAN HE WAS WHEN HE WENT WEST, OR IF HE JUST DID NOT KNOW WHEN HE WAS BORN, WHICH WAS VERY TYPICAL OF THE IRISH OF THAT TIME. HE IS DEFINITELY THE STEPHEN BORN IN TULLAMORE, AND THAT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY MULTIPLE DNA MATCHES BETWEEN HIS DESCENDANTS AND HIS BROTHERS' DESCENDANTS.

THE ONLY POSSIBLE CORRECT STEPHEN IN THE 1880 CENSUS IS IN BODIE. (AND THE ONLY POSSIBLE CORRECT STEPHEN IN THE 1860 CENSUS WAS IN TUOLUMNE.)
ALL OF THESE RECORDS ARE THE ONLY STEPHEN WALSH WHO WAS A MINER IN CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA IN THE 19TH CENTURY, AND THEY FOLLOW IN PROGRESSION.
