Enlisted at Perry, Maine Oct 29, 1861 at age 19 as a Sergeant into Co C Maine Coast Guard. Mustered out Sept 10, 1862. Re-enlisted Sept 10, 1862 into Co E 28th Maine Infantry Regiment. He was left sick at Baton Rouge, LA Aug 6, 1863 when the 28th returned to Maine.
