from 1850 Census: annotated, Carrol County, Virginia, Alderman, page 87:
"815. Alexander Dixon, 35 male, blacksmith, $800. born North Carolina., Sally, 31 female, born Virginia; Griggs 12 male, b. Virginia; Moses 10 male, born Virginia; Tobitha 8 female, born Virginia; Matilda 6 female, born Virginia. They came here from Grayson County; Alex had married Sarah Hampton in 1836. The youngest three children shown here died in December 1856 of scarlet fever, and Griggs was killed in the war. There were two sons born after this census."

The Dixon family settled on the New River in Carroll County, Virginia and owned large acreage in the Turkey Knob area of Piney Creek. Alexander was a carpenter, farmer, and miller and homesteaded around 3700 acres of land.
