In 1897 Ruth & her brother Thomas graduated from Varna High School in Marshall County, IL. In 1905 Ruth then graduated from the Nursing program at St Joseph's Hospital in Chicago.
Ruth stayed in Chicago working as a Nurse until 1941 when she moved to California to be near her sister Maud.
Age discrimination existed even back in the 1940s. When Ruth moved to California she was 41. She was having problems getting a Nursing job. Ruth's felt her age was against her, so she said she was a couple of years younger. At a younger age the job interview reaction changed and she was hired.
The problem with this was Ruth had to work a couple of more years past her 65th birthday until she could retire.
