Samuel was the son of Joseph Enoch Cornett and Sarah Brown of Letcher County, KY. They were the parents of the following known children: Sarah (Cornett) Brown, b. 1861, d. 1919, Harriett (Cornett) Brown, b. 1863, d. 1921, John Wesley Cornett, b. 1866, Joseph E. Cornett, b. 1868, Elizabeth "Betty Jane" (Cornett) Back, b. 1870, d. 1930 and Rachel Cornett, b. 1873, d. 1875.
