Graduated from the University of Vermont, 1884; class president. After graduation Gilbert worked in South Dakota and Kansas before returning to Burlington in 1889. In Burlington, he served as the assistant city clerk.

Gilbert married Mary E. Root on August 26, 1891. Their children include Katherine S.
