William was the son of Mary Ann Stuart and William A. Carpenter. He married Calista Husted Aug. 22, 1857 in Holmes Co., Ohio. They had thirteen children, James, Louise, John, Amanda, Alice, Weltma, Andrew, Granville, Sarah, Arlow, Jessie, Robert and Edward. The family moved from Ohio to Illinois in 1859 and then to Iowa about 1865. Calista died in 1885 and William married Clarinda (Davis) Husted Jan. 6, 1886 in Wayne Co.
