Dulcena S Upton was the daughter of Joseph Crawford Upton and Amanda Jane West. She was born in the Alarka Community of what was then Macon County. Alarka would later became a portion of Swain County in 1871 when Swain County was formed from sections of Macon & Jackson Counties.
Dulcena S Upton married Merriman Micaja "Mack" Barker on 13 Feb 1881 in Swain County, NC. Their marriage was performed by: T.M. Frizzell, Justice of the Peace at G.W. Dillard's home. Witnesses were: G.W. Dillard, A.J. Long & A.D. Cagle.
Seven children would be born to this union:
1) Warren Lawrence Barker
2) Sarah Jane Barker
3) Ella Lucinda "Ellie" Barker
4) Andrew Elias Barker
5) Lillie Barker
6) Minnie Emma Barker
7) Stella Barker
In the 1930 Swain County Census Records Dulcena was widowed and lived with her daughter Minnie Emma {Barker} Thomas and her husband William Riley Thomas. She continued to live with them until her death in 1935.
She was 75-years of age.
