He married Matilda 'Mattie' Brockett in 1790. (though it is so noted some believe her maiden name is Porter.)They had 11 children.

The Bowdoin family, originally Baudouin, French Huguenot, Pierre immigrated to America in 1686. 1785 James Bowdoin II is elected governor of Massachusetts just after the Revolution. Bowdoin College in Maine started by James Bowdoin III in 1804.
