Joan was the daughter of Senator Harry Darby of Kansas City, Kansas. She married Roy A. Edwards, Jr. in 1943. He died in December 1987.
Joan was Past President of the Junior League of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties. Served as chairman of Bethany Medical Center Foundation. Was Past President of Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. Volunteered for the Sunflower Council of the Camp Fire Girls and for the Boy Scouts. She was the Former Director of Gas Service Company and Western Resources of Topeka.
She was an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors for the American Royal. Honorary Life Member of BOTAR organization. Member of the Mission Hills Country Club, the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado and the Kansas City Club.
She was also a member of the Wyandot Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
