She was born on March 19, 1921, in Vilas, NC, to the late Leonard and Carrie E. (Moody) Hayes, and graduated from Cove Creek High School in 1939. On December 24, 1939, Josephine married Edward Douglas Herman in Vilas, NC. He preceded her in death having been blessed with over 50 years of marriage.
Josephine worked as a cook for the Romulus School system. She was a faithful member of Berean Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir, nursery and visitation ministries. Other activities Josephine enjoyed included bowling, Scrabble, gardening, crafts and craft shows. She was also a gifted seamstress.
Survivors include, her loving children, Joanne Harris, Kathryn Hawley, Christine (Richard) Gorham, Michael Herman; her siblings, Dwight Hayes, Thomas (Grace) Hayes, Carolyn Farthing, Dale (Betty) Hayes; and grandchildren, Susan Miller, Shelley Goering, Carrie Conn, Melanie Hartenburg, Kendra Coogan, Scott Gorham, Lori Makkai, Edward Herman, III; 19 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband, Ed, she was preceded in death by her son, Edward Herman Jr., son in law, Glenn (G.R) and her siblings, Roger, Raymond, Nina Banner, Clara Baird and Bynum Eugene Hayes, who was killed in action during WW II.
Funeral services for Josephine will take place at 1 p.m., Monday, January, 11, 2016, at the Berean Baptist Church in Adrian with Rev. Doug Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park
