*Note - ref: Oceana County Historical Genealogy Book, page 520:
"Mr. Heim built and ran the Eagle Hotel in Ferry, Michigan. He also had a store, saloon, and dance hall in connection. He did a big business. It was unlawful to sell liquor, but when asked what he had, would "wink" and reply, "I always have wheat flour on "tap". He, in later years, sold the business to McClave."

Biograpgy on John Heim that appeared in the Oceana County Pioneers & Business Men of Today (page 375-376) - A sketch of John accompanied the biography (note: this book was written in the late 1800s):

JOHN HEIM - 1877
"John M. Heim was born at Wittemburg, Germany, his parents being Michael and Mary Heim. He was married in New York City to Mary Shelcup, who died in 1875. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters. In 1876 he married Agnes Whitcomb, whose parent's names were William and Mary Anderson; they have no children (*referring to Agnes and John). Mr. Heim, besides serving four years in the German Army before coming to this country, has been a Union Soldier serving as a Private twenty-eight months in the 72nd and 38th Ohio Infantry. He was a prominent and enthusiastic G.A.R. member, and held the office of S.V. By trade, he was a cabinet maker and joiner, serving an apprenticeship of fourteen years; and following his trade altogether for forty years. Before going into the army, he provided his family with a home; but coming home from the war sick, and his whole family being sick, he lost his home. He then decided to come to Oceana County in August 1877, arriving here with nothing of value excepting an old team. Never having farmed and being no judge of land, he located in the openings of Otto, where he soon starved out. He then homesteaded 160 acres one-half mile east of Ferry on the "flats," a large portion of the land being under water. Afterwards he drained the land into White River. He and the boys worked hard and saved and they soon had a good farm. He gave each of the boys who were with him 40 acres, gave his daughter $300.00, and sold the forty on which the buildings were located for $1,500.00 and moved to Ferry. In 1884 he built the hotel building in which he is now located, known as the "Eagle Hotel." In 1888 he built a large store building with hall above called known as "Heim's Hall". Mr. Heim has always been a public spirited man and an evidence of that fact is the Baptist Church, the only church building in Ferry, a large share of the expense of which has been borne by him."
