Elizabeth T. Bain Brittain was born and raised in Chester City, Delaware County, PA. She had one sibling, an older sister, Jane.
About the age of 18, her family moved to Passaic, NJ, where her father had found new employment at a printmaking company (textiles). Elizabeth worked as a typist and stenographer and did some statistical work for Botany Worsted Mills in Passaic, NJ, after completing one year of college.
In 1915, after her father’s unexpected death, Elizabeth and her mother moved to Philadelphia to be closer to family who lived there.
In May, 1916, Elizabeth became engaged to Harold M. Brittain. On October 11, 1916, Elizabeth and Harold were married in Philadelphia by the Reverend Mr.Willard Dayton Brown, minister of the Dutch Reformed Church she had attended in New Jersey.
Because of Harold’s job they moved and lived in different areas of the country including Illinois, Ohio, and Massachusetts before finally returning to Pennsylvania and settling in Drexel Hill, Delaware County.
Elizabeth and Harold were the parents of two children: Jane Curtis Brittain (spouse of Hank Miller), born in 1919, and George Benjamin Brittain (F.A.G. #101332138), born in 1922, and grandparents of 4 children.
Upon her marriage, she was a very dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and was especially good at baking. She also was an accomplished seamstress. Smocking was one of her specialties. Later on she took great pleasure in a church-related group - Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.) Her daughter and later her step-granddaughter were active in this organization.
Before her passing, she closed up her apartment and went to live with her son, George, and his wife Thelma Dee in Chevy Chase, MD.
