Chrystene "Chris" Vance Kirkpatrick, 92, of Meridian, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, in Meridian. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Meridian First United Methodist Church with burial following at the Meridian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel.

Chris was born in Floyd County, Texas, to Charles and Lillie (Bickham) Trowbridge. She graduated from Floydada High School and the University of Oklahoma. After teaching Home Economics in Kemp, she was Coleman County Home Demonstration Agent with the Texas Extension Service for several years. In 1940, she married J.W. Vance of Coleman, who was a Texas Master Farmer and Rancher. She worked with her husband as an active partner in the polled hereford business, showing Vance Golden Hoof Farms cattle in national and state shows and selling the cattle throughout the U.S. and in foreign countries. After the death of her husband in 1961, she continued in the cattle and sheep business, moving her operation to Valley Mills, Texas. In 1971, she married Frank W. Kirkpatrick of Meridian, who was a retired rancher.

Chris served as president of the Central Texas Polled Hereford Association, being the only woman ever elected to that honor. She was also president of the National Wool Growers Auxiliary, the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Auxiliary, and the Coleman County Livestock Association Auxiliary. Chris was known for her enthusiam in all her activities and her abundant hospitality. She was a member and steward of the Meridian First United Methodist Church and had served as president of the Meridian Study Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.W. Vance in 1961; her second husband, Frank W. Kirkpatrick in 1990; step-son, Kenneth Vance, in 1985; and seven older brothers and sisters.

She is survived by step-grandsons, John Vance, Robert Vance, and Ted Vance; godchildren, Nan Baird Strasburger, Angie Baird Whitney, and Rick Baird; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
