William was born in New Jersey. He married Ruth Carl [sic] on 3 March 1833 in Washington County, Ohio and they had nine known children. In addition to the seven children listed below, the 1850 U.S. census shows a daughter, Eliza, age 16 and a daughter Jeanett, age 6/12 (i.e. six months at time of census - 3 September 1850). I have seen family trees indicating Eliza died 19 August 1851 and Jeanett died 9 October 1855; however I have seen no evidence to support those deaths. Neither daughter appears in the family's 1860 or later censuses. Additionally, it should be noted I have found a variety of surnames for William's wife Ruth, i.e. Curle, Carle, Carl, Carvel and Carroll.
