Sarah Jane Curtis, oldest daughter of Joseph Curtis and
Sally Ann Reed was born Sep. 28, 1847, Cag Creek, Iowa, so
came across the plains when a child. Jan. 1, 1868, she was
married to Alvin Bradford Kempton. They helped in settling many new places, building forts, making ditches, and bridges, always living on the frontier and taking part in Indian troubles, etc., with the old-timers.
When on the road to the Gila, they intended to travel
from Ft. Apache with a company of soldiers, to be safe from
indians. They were detained a day, and when they followed
the soldiers a day later, for several miles along the road they saw bodies of horses, and marks of a bloody fight the company had with a large band of Apaches that had started out on a raid.
They settled in Eden, from which place, in February,
1896, Alvin started on a two years mission to England.
He died Nov. 29, 1917, in Eden. She still lives in the old
home. They had ten children.
