James A. Gates, 63, of Churchill, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015. Jim, "Seamus", was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Robert P. and Vivian C. (Hansberry) Gates. He was the beloved brother of Marjorie Muir, Edward (Virginia) Gates, Susan Austin (Jack) Warner, Vivian (John) Macurak, Gary (Susan) Gates, Robert (Debra) Gates, Terence (Jean Ann) Gates, Gregory (Kathie) Gates, Francie (Tim) Jacob, Laura (Eric) Heck and Eileen (Joseph) Bittner. Jim is also survived by numerous "favorite" nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored and loved very much. Jim was the owner of Jim's Barber Shop on Reynolds St. in Point Breeze. He was a 1970 graduate of Central Catholic High School and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. Jim was a passionate outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing in the area of his family roots in Cambria County. He also loved to golf with his friends on local courses and on coveted golf trips. For his family, Jim developed and operated a weekly, intricate college football poll which all enjoyed and will miss. Above all, Jim was proud to be a link in the Gates family chain.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, 412-824-8800. Mass of Christian Burial will be at a time to be announced Thursday in St. John Fisher Church. Jim will then be laid to rest in the Gates family lot in Beaver Valley Cemetery in Cambria County.
