Vivian C. (Hansberry) Gates, 79, of Churchill, died on Valentine's Day, Monday, Feb. 14, 2005. Vivian was a graduate of St. Canice Grade School; South Hills High School, in three years, and the University of Pittsburgh, also in three years. Before marrying in 1945, she was a business and Spanish teacher at Sharpsburg High School. She was a member of St. John Fisher Church and secretary of the parish Women's Guild and a longtime volunteer at UPMC Braddock, with more than 2,000 hours of service. Vivian raised 12 children and educated them all. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Clara Garahan Hansberry; siblings, Kitty Grace Thompson, James Hansberry and Mary Frances Ricketts, and aunt, Mary Garahan, who raised her after her mother died when Vivian was 2. For 60 years, she was the wife of Dr. Robert P. Gates, who was raised in Coalport, Clearfield County. Mother of Marjorie (John) Muir, Edward (Virginia), Susan Austin, James, Vivian (John) Macurak, Gary (Susan), Robert (Debora), Terence (Jean Ann), Gregory (Kathie), Francie (Timothy) Jacob, Laura (Eric) Heck and Eileen (Joseph) Bittner. Grandmother of David, Christopher and Terry Muir; Bartley, Charley, Annie, Lauren and Claire Gates; Patrick and P.J. Austin; Michael Macurak; Jeanne and Christopher Gates; Ruth, Kristin and Robert Gates; Rachel, Dan and Maggie Gates; Gus, Jennifer and Joseph Gates; Jeffrey, Mark and Marcie Jacob, and Morgan Bittner. Great-grandmother of Ryan Gates and Cody Muir. Friends welcome from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 Linden Ave., East Pittsburgh, (412) 824-8800. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John Fisher Church. Everyone please meet at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family requests that Masses be offered for Vivian.
