Evangeline "Eva" May Loomis was born at Canton Twp., Bradford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Seth Loomis and Ann Fenton Loomis. She married Dayton Leslie Phinney, the son of Allen McKean Phinney and Hannah Jane Clark on 8 May 1901 at the home of her parents in East Canton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania with the Rev. Henry Allen, Methodist minister, officiating.

After Dayton's untimely death on 10 Oct 1913 at Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, Eva worked as a cook in various private homes to support her children. Since there were very limited public resources for widowed women with children, the children were sometimes left to live with, and help, relatives. Eva was a proud woman and always sent money to help support them.

She married a widower, Charles J. Smith on 16 June 1921 at South Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania with the Rev. J. Earl Jacobs of the Methodist-Episcopal Church officiating. They resided at W. Union St., Canton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, until Charles' death 24 Oct 1929.

After Charles' death, she sold their home on W. Union St. to her daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Daniel N. Bergquist. She then worked as a cook in various institutions in New York State. When she could no longer work, she split her time living with her children.

She passed away 15 Jan 1965, at Troy Community Hospital, Troy, Bradford, Pennsylvania, at age 85.

Eva was laid to rest next to her husband, Dayton on 18 Jan 1965 with Rev. Owen Barrett, retired Methodist minister, officiating.
