Israel Durr was born in Buffalo, New York. He was living in Eureka, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, when he got married. He married Phoebe Bourdon on December 27, 1859, at Ripon, Wisconsin. Their son, Alfred, was born on September 1, 1862.

Israel enlisted at the age of 21, on Jan 25, 1862. He was placed in Company K. He was 5' 8 1/2" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light colored hair. On July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg he was shot in his side and the bullet pierced his lung. The young man was taken to a hospital in Gettysburg, where he died two days later.
