Daniel was a veteran of World War I. He was employed as a coal miner when he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 at Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA. He enlisted as a private at Wellsboro on September 18, 1917, and was sent to Camp Meade, Maryland for training. He received a promotion to the rank of corporal on February 18, 1918. He was assigned to Company B, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces (Co. B, 314th Inf. Regt., 79th Div., AEF).
Daniel's unit sailed for France on July 8, 1918 aboard the USS Leviathan (at that time the Leviathan was the largest ship in the world and carried approximately 14,500 doughboys and crew to France on that trip). It is unclear whether Leviathan sailed from New York or Hoboken, New Jersey. They arrived at the port of Brest, Finistère, Bretagne, France on July 15, 1918. His unit fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
After the armistice, Dan's unit remained in France and finally set sail from the port of St. Nazaire, Loire-lnferieure, Bretagne, France for the United States on May 15, 1919 aboard the USS Matoika. They made port at Hoboken, New Jersey on May 26, 1919. Dan was honorable discharged from service on May 31, 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.
After his discharge Dan returned to Arnot to live with his father and work in the mines.
Dan married Bernice Irene Phinney on September 25, 1925 at the home of her mother on Union St. in Canton, PA. The young couple lived in Canton, Arnot, and Williamsport and often endured separations when Dan was working away from home. Later in their marriage they purchased from Bernice's mother the house on Union St. in Canton where they were married.
The couple had seven children:

Doris Irene Bergquist Koehler (1928)
MaryLou Jean Bergquist Wheeler (1930-2007)
Daniel "Danny" Allen Bergquist (1932)

All children except Doris were born at the house on Union St., and all graduated from Canton High School.
Dan's last place of employment was Rockwell's Mill in Canton. He retired from Rockwell's in the late 1960s. He lost his beloved Bernice in 1970 and lived out the remainder of his life in their home on Union St. in Canton. This house is now owned by his grandson, Scott Wheeler.
