Longtime Sanford, Colo. resident D. Duwayne Cornum, 91, died August 30, 2006 at the Conejos County Hospital in La Jara, Colo.
Duwayne was born March 24, 1915 in Sanford to Dorrel and Lizzie Reed Cornum. He married Voris Jane Miller on December 24, 1936 and their marriage was sealed on December 29, 1960 in the Mesa, Ariz. temple. She preceded him in death on April 22, 1998.
He was a member of the Sanford First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various positions within the church. Duwayne and his wife Voris served in the Pittsburgh, Penn. mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and spent most of their time in the West Virginia area.
He spent twelve years running Cornum's Hardware, Service Station, and Garage in Sanford, and later worked in road and bridge construction in New Mexico, building several dams. Duwayne also served on the Sanford Cemetery Board for 25 years, and was the caretaker for more than 20 years.
In his younger years, he was affectionately nicknamed "Danger" and "DD" by many friends due to his ability to take on any situation regardless of the risk.
Duwayne is survived by his children Sherry Scheibe of Manassa, Colo., Tennis (Donna) Cornum of Burleson, Texas, Renie (Dallas) Norton of Romeo, Colo., Hal (Mary) Cornum of Sanford, Myrna (Dennis) Moeller of Antonito, Colo., Debbie (Jack) Gray of Albuquerque, N.M., and Marilee (Pat) Vannoy of Sanford; his brothers and sisters Gwen Emerson of Santee, Calif., Bonnie Coombs of Tremont, Utah, Shirley Fugate of Concord, Calif., Frank Cornum of Anaheim, Calif., Monte (Ruth) Cornum of La Jara, Judy Parrish of Sanford, and Kirt (Frankie) Cornum of Palisade, Colo.; as well as 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Voris, his infant brother Rex Cornum, his son-in-law Bob Scheibe, his grandson Kevin Scheibe, and his great grandson Brett McDaniel.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Sanford First Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
A visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 1, 2006 at the Rogers Family Mortuary Chapel in Manassa and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, September 2 at the church.
Interment will follow services in the Sanford Cemetery.
