Jennet Strain was the daughter of David Strean/Strain who died in 1783 and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). Elizabeth went by the name Strain following David's death. David's Hanover, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania will was probated 3 October 1783 and his inventory was recorded the same date. This implies he died some time sooner than early October. It lists his son in law, James McCreight and others.

Jennet "Strain" and James McCreight were married on 6 Jul 1769, by Rev. Roan at the Paxtang Presbyterian Church, in Dauphin Co., PA. History of the Sesqui-Centennial of Paxtang Church, September 18, 1890 by Mathias Wilson McAlarney, Harrisburg, PA, 1890, 272 and 274.

They had 8 known McCreight children, connected below:

Elizabeth, 1772 - 1837
David, 1775 - 1859 (Jane Campbell)
James, Jr., 1778 - 1825 (Mary Dearmond, dau of Richard)**
Nancy, 1785- 1837 (James Sloan)
Alexander 1788 - 1849
William, 1792 - 1814
Sarah, 1795 -1811
John, unk. (m. Mary "Polly" Dearmond b 1784 and Peggy Rowan)*

The 4 children buried beside Jennet and her husband, James McCreight are: Elizabeth 1772-1837, James Jr. 1778-1825, William 1792-1814 and Sarah 1795-1811. Nearby is daughter Nancy McCreight Sloan, 1785 - 1837, and her husband, James Sloan. Sons David & Alexander were buried in Ohio.

The "about 1800" Plan of the Old Hanover Church Pew Occupants includes Alexr McCreight in row 23 (across from the pulpit) and David McCreight in row 12.

*In the Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church by Rev. Thos. H. Robinson, D.D., published in 1878, by the Dauphin County Historical Society, page 26 lists a JOHN M'Creight married a Peggy Rowan on 1 Jan 1800 plus a Polly Dearmond on 15 Nov 1804, at Old Hanover Church. "Married on Wednesday evening last, by the reverend Mr. Snowden, Mr. John McCreight, to Miss Peggy Rowan, both of this borough" was recorded in the Oracle of Dauphin (PA), on 6 Jan 1800. The same paper, dated 1 Dec 1804 says: "Married, last Thursday, night, in West Hanover, Mr. JOHN McCreight, SON OF JAMES MCCREIGHT, ESQ., to Miss Polly Dearmond, daughter of the late Richard Dearmond, deceased, all of Hanover." Confused if Mary Dearmond married both brothers, John and James (see below) or where the error was in multiple sources.

**In William H Egle's Notes and Queries, Harrisbur, PA, 1895, Vol. 2, P 429, Mary Deyarmond, daughter and 2nd child of Richard Deyarmond (Dearmond) and Eleanor Stewart, married JAMES McCreight.

According to J M Runk & Company's book, The Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1896, p 146: Mary DeYarmond, born 1784, the daughter of Richard DeYarmond (AKA Dearmond of Hanover Twp.) and Eleanor Stewart, married "JAMES McCreight, Jr." Her parents are buried here also using the Dearmond spelling.

As customarily done, so many of Jennet's children were named like her siblings and parents: Elizabeth, David, Alexander, William, Sarah and John. Perhaps James McCreight's mother was named Nancy.

The McCreights lived on James McCreight's late father's (Anthony McCreight) Hanover Twp. land that bordered on Jennet's late parent's (David Strean/Strain and Elizabeth Strain) lot, until it was sold in 1807-09, to settle James McCreight, Sr.'s estate.

Jennet's suspected brother or possible cousin, Alexander Strain served under her husband Capt. James McCreight. PA State Archives, Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File. Alexander Strain 1779 and 1782 (see photo).

Jennet's birth and death county and state (above) are assumed, but unproven. Jennet's father was on land in Hanover Twp., prior to 1751. I have estimated her birth year to be ABOUT 1752, since she was 76, in her 77th year, based on the gravestone data.

On her husband's FaG site is a plat map of her father in law's land that she lived on with her new family after marriage. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Warrant dated 25 Feb 1754 was surveyed on 30 Feb 1754 for Anthony McCrait in Hanover Township. His land is in the interior and is north of the "Rackoon" Creek. Above his land in 1754 is David Strain (Jennet's father) and NE is John Strain's, suspected kin (John Strain, Sr. died in 1752 so this is now probably his son John, Juniors'. In 1785 this same land became Dauphin County and in 1813, it became Lebanon County on the western border of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Member of the Old Hanover Church included: Anthony M'Creight, 1787-blank; James M'Creight, 1787-1814; David M'Creight, 1802-1840; John M'Creight, 1804-1811; Alex M'Neight, 1806-1810; John M'Neight,1806-1811; Mrs. E M'Creight, 1813-1837; Alex M'Creight, 1815-1840; James M'Creight, 1822-1825 and Mrs M'Creight,1826-1842, p 32-33.
Rev. Thomas Hastings Robinson's Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church, published by the Historical Society of Dauphin County, 1878, page 41 also records the dates on her gravestone and other familly members.

This is such an amazing cemetery to see so many of their neighbors and collateral kin here. There are many unmarked and undocumented graves here.
