Enlisted in the RN: 11 May 1915 at Chatham for the duration of hostilities.
Incorrectly gave his DOB as 14 Jan 1880 (Perhaps at 44 years he may have been too old to enlist at that time.)

Son of Robert and Ellen Davis nee Gill.
Husband of Mary F. Martin (formerly Davis), of 12, Lissant Street, Edgehill, Liverpool.

(Robert Davis was a Naval pensioner and a native of Co. Down. in 1901 he was the Assistant Harbourmaster at Howth)
(Mary Frances Clarke was born on 30 Sept 1877 at The Marsh, Drogheda.)

Marriage.
Alexander Davis, a bachelor, a Postman, from 5 North William St. son of Robert Davis, a Clerk, married Mary Frances Clarke, a spinster, a Worker, from 5 North William St. daughter of Matthew Clarke, a Labourer, on 12 February 1901 at St. Agatha's Church, North William Street, Dublin.

In the 1901 census, they were living at North Summer St. Dublin

HMS "Foyle" was a British River Class Destroyer, which was badly damaged on 15 March 1917, when it hit a German mine. The explosion caused the bow section of the destroyer to be blown off.
It was taken under tow, but foundered a short time later, just south of Plymouth Sound.
The sinking resulted in the loss of 30 of the crew of 70.
3 of these men have marked graves and the rest are commemorated at various Naval memorials in the UK.

His body was recovered and returned to Ireland
