Carl Oscar Vetleson was born March 9, 1889, at his parents' farm in Tumuli Township, near Dalton, Minnesota. He was only three when his father died, and was the last of Vetle Torgerson’s eighteen children. It’s amazing that Carl’s oldest step-sibling, Torjus Vetlesen, was born at Kviteseid, Norway, in February 1840, nearly fifty years before. Torjus died in 1841 – Carl would die in 1939, nearly one hundred years after him. By 1910, he and his sister, Emma, were the only ones left with their mother on the Tumuli farm. Clara A. Chapman was born September 19, 1889. When she was a girl, her mother brought her children to Fergus Falls, where Clara met Carl. They were married at Moorhead, Minnesota, on August 31, 1913. They had one child, daughter Anita. He registered for the WWI draft when his family lived in Fergus Falls. At the time, he was a plumber for the state hospital in town. During the war, Carl served as a corporal in Company K of the 131st Infantry. He was wounded, though not seriously, in France. Upon returning from overseas in 1919, Carl, Clara, and Emma left Minnesota and went to Spokane, Washington. In 1920, Carl was a butcher and Clara was a cigar maker there – perhaps she’d learned the trade from the same Fergus Falls cigar factory where her sister-in-law Emma Vetleson worked. The 1930 census shows Carl as a meat cutter in a market, while Clara waited tables at a restaurant. Carl Oscar Vetleson died April 5, 1939, at Spokane, when he was 50 and was buried at Fairmont Cemetery. Clara moved briefly to Seattle after his death. In 1940, she was a restaurant cook in the city, but she eventually returned to Spokane. Clara Chapman Vetleson died there on February 5, 1973. She was buried in Pines Cemetery.
