Ida Marie Vetleson was born December 5, 1884, at Tumuli township, northeast of Dalton. Her father died when she was eight, so much responsibility was placed upon her young, able shoulders. Through the summer of 1905, she lived with her mother and siblings on the farm at Tumuli. On July 17, 1905, she married Benjamin Rustad at Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He was born September 5, 1875, at Dane Prairie in Otter Tail County. In October 1907, the couple left for North Dakota, where they began the long process of building a house, barn, granary, and chicken coop on their homestead northwest of Werner in Dunn County. Ben was a carpenter by trade, and he worked for a while in Canada with the Grand Trunk Railroad. Like a lot of Dakota pioneer men, Ben was a hunter and trapper of coyotes, badgers, muskrats, and mink. Meanwhile, Ida kept the home fires burning, and she loved her collection of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. They had no children. During the 1920s, her widowed mother, Aase Torgerson, came from Minnesota to live with them. As discussed above, Aase went to live with her oldest son, Jens, to care for her granddaughter, Aagot Vetleson, in 1926. When Aase died in 1929, Aagot lived with her Uncle Ben and Aunt Ida Rustad, until she married in 1930. The Rustads lived on their farm until 1959, when they sold it and moved to Dunn Center, five miles east of Werner. Benjamin Rustad died at Hazen (Mercer County) on April 30, 1966. Ida Vetleson Rustad was 90 when she died, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson, on August 21, 1975. They are buried at Werner Cemetery.
