Joe Cruise, 70 years old, formerly of Effingham, died at his home near Holton Friday, following a long illness. Mr. Cruise had been seriously ill for several weeks.
Born at Cambridge, Ind., August 27, 1865, Mr. Cruise came to Kansas with his parents when he as a child and spent his early life near Monrovia and Effingham. He later lived at Whiting before moving to the farm near Holton.
He married Miss Catherine O'Neil of Whiting December 29, 1891. Mrs. Cruise survives, as do two sons, Leo M. Cruise and Joseph B. Cruise, both of the home; a daughter, Mrs. D. C. Belden, of Topeka; four grandchildren; four brothers, William Cruise, of Bakersfield, Calfi.; Andrew Cruise, of San Diego, Calif.; Arthur Cruise, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Richard Cruise, of Wellington, Kansas; and seven sisters, Mrs. Helen Bohannon, of Holton; Mrs. Plummer, of Lawton, Okla; Mrs. Nora Eckert and Mrs. Catherine Eckert, both of Arrington, Mrs. Agnes Ward, of Effingham; Mrs. Grace Gettings, of Seattle, Wash.; and Mrs. Frances Jackson, of Lansing, Kansas.
Funeral services were held in St. Dominic's church, in Holton, Monday morning and interment made on the family lot in St. Ann's cemetery, in Effingham.
Those who remember Mr. Cruise best think of him as a kind hearted man who, with his wife, was always willing to help others in times of sickness or sorrow.
