Mary Katheryn Boyce Summers Goates, beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, died May 8, 2002, in Encinitas, California, after an extended illness.

She was born July 17, 1929, in Mt. Pleasant, UT to her parents E Daniel Boyce and Katie Aleen Madsen Boyce Summers.

Mary K. attended both Wasatch Academy High School in Mt. Pleasant and East High School in Salt Lake City, UT where she graduated in 1946. At East High School, she enjoyed being stage manager for school plays.

Mary K. attended the University of Utah from 1946-48 where she majored in Anthropology. She was initiated into the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority in 1948. She also maintained a pilot license for several years.

Mary K.'s engagement to Bruce Larkin Goates was announced at a Kappa Kappa Gamma Tea April 3, 1949. They were married May 17, 1949, in Salt Lake City, UT. She worked as a secretary for four years after her first child was born. Mary K. served with enthusiasm in the work of the Utah League of Women Voters.

She was active in Cub Scouts and the Primary organization in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was also active in the PTA for 22 years. Mary K. said her all-time favorite job was being room mom. She also was a realtor in Salt Lake City, Utah for many years. Her life was filled with service to her family, her community, and her church.

Mary K. is survived by her husband, Bruce Larkin Goates; son, Gary Bruce Goates, his wife, Patricia Anntoinette Goates, their daughters, Veronica Kate, Savannah Kate (Sunnyvale, CA) and his daughter, Mallori Whitney Kester-Goates (Round Rock, TX); son, Gregory Bruce Goates, his wife, Constance Kralik Goates, their children, Rebecca Mary, Grant Daniel, and Matthew Gregory (Encinitas, CA); daughter, Wendy Katheryn Goates England, her husband, Walter Don England, their children, Katheryn Rae, Walter Ian, Briana Catherine (Carls-bad, CA); brother, Robert Daniel Boyce (College Station, TX); sister, Eugenia Ann Boyce Sessions (Encinitas, CA); and sister, Marba Echo Boyce Andrus (Mesa, AZ). Mary K.'s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all.

Services will be Sat. May 18, 2002, 12 noon, Monument Park 11th Ward chapel, 1565 S. Foothill Dr. Friends may call Fri. 6-8 p.m., Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr, and 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
