John Sherman Baker, Sr., 75, of Exeland, died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at Ladysmith Care & Rehab. He battled cancer for about four years.

John was born in Seeley on Aug. 19, 1939; a son of Elvin and Nellie Villiard Baker. He married Lila Jean Veness in Exeland at The Community Church on July 3, 1959; she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2005.

He was a member of The River of Life Church in Bruce.

John started his younger years growing up in Seeley and then moved to Sawyer County, where his parents bought a farm. He was raised there with his three sisters. He worked construction in Three Rivers, Mich. Shortly after that he met Lila Jean Veness and they were married. He worked at the Milwaukee Bedding Co. in Ladysmith, and then at the Ladysmith Concrete Co. from 1967 to 1978.

He loved family, spending time with them at picnics, holidays, sledding parties every winter. It was a blast. He also enjoyed going to the restaurant for coffee and visiting friends. He also had a sentimental side. He would listen to your problems and try to help you through them.

His laugh would bring a smile to anyone. He loved to crack jokes. He would sit there and all of the sudden a joke would come out. He loved deer hunting, and he was a great shot. He really loved life.

He moved to Waukesha in 1988 and worked at Zero-Zone Refrigeration. He enjoyed how wonderful garage saling was and went often. He retired in 2001 and moved back to Exeland to be closer to his children and grandchildren. You could see he was very happy to be back with what meant the most to him — his family.

John is survived by his sons and daughters Rocke (Kathy) of Exeland, Randy (Carol) of Exeland, John Jr. (Tammie) of Bruce, Duane (Senaida) of Ladysmith, Dixie (Jerry) Dillivan of Exeland and Victoria (Robert) Butler of Bruce. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and his sisters Delores (Stanley) Ferr, Mavis (Wayne) Joyner and Jean (Robert) Knobeck, all of Exeland.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, Nov. 3, at Grace Bible Church in Bruce with Pastor Richard Melton officiating. Burial was in The Windfall Cemetery in Exeland.
