Joseph Chizar

May 11, 1918 -March 21, 2001

Joseph Chizar, 82, a resident of Claremont for 40 years, died on March 21, 2001, at Shea Convalescent Hospital in Upland following an illness with congestive heart failure.

Mr. Chizar was born on May 11, 1918, in South Bend, Ind.
He grew up there and at the age of 18 became a professional boxer.
He took part in matches from New York to California before his career was put on hold by the draft and the beginning of World War II.
Mr. Chizar served in the 551st Parachute Infantry. After surviving the famed Battle of the Bulge and parachuting into battle during the D-Day invasion in Europe.
Mr. Chizar completed the rest of his military obligation as a boxer and boxing trainer.
As a boxer for the U.S. Army, Mr. Chizar was a Golden Gloves winner.

Mr. Chizar moved to California in the mid-1950s and was joined by his wife, Lorraine Herding Chizar.
They were married tor more than 35 years until her death in 1991.

During his years in the area, Mr. Chizar owned small businesses.
He retired when he was in his early 60s, volunteered his time as a referee and a trainer at Chino Men's Prison boxing programs, and taught boxing at the YMCA.
Mr. Chizar was also a charter member of Golden Hill Post VFW 8748.

He is survived by his daughter, Darlene Spoerre of Rancho Cucamonga; by his sister, Irene of South Bend; and by his granddaughter, Megan Spoerre of Rancho Cucamonga, and his grandson, Steven Chizar Jr. of Pomona.
His son, Steven Chizar, died on March 15, 2000.

Memorial services for Mr. Chizar were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 26, 2001 , In Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church at Berkeley and Bonita Avenues.
Interment was at Oak Park Cemetery.
Todd Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
