Sheila Aden Higgins, one of Hopkinsville's most beloved citizens and a retired educator and businesswoman, has died at the age of 101.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Drs. Howard H. Willen and John B. Begley officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home, Hopkinsville.

She died at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at her East Seventh Street home of natural causes.

Although she had been bedridden for a number of years as the result of osteoporosis, she had remained in good health, with family members saying her death was unexpected.

A native of Christmasville, Tenn., she was born Feb. 6, 1904, the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Mamie Elizabeth McCracken Aden.

She had taught Latin for 28 years after earning her master's in education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., and having been educated from high school through college in the classics.

She taught for 11 years at Carroll County, Tenn., for 10 years in Shelby County at White Haven High School, for five years at East Tennessee State College in Johnson City and three years at Memphis State College.

She was a former owner of Higgins Realty Inc., and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the board of Lindsey Wilson College and was a member of the original board of University Heights Academy, where the National Honor Society chapter is named in her honor.

She had also been a member of the Shakespeare Club, a bridge club and was known for entertaining, for her style and her smile.

She explained to a reporter several years ago, "My mother said I was born with a smile on my face, so I suppose I had always had an optimistic nature."

Her husband, E.H. Higgins, died in 1966.

Survivors include 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.HOPKINSVILLE -- Shelia Aden Higgins, 101, Hughart & Beard Funeral Home.
