BRANDON - Persis Hannah Ayer, 96, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

Mrs. Ayer was born May 29, 1919, in St. Albans, the daughter of Ira and Charlotte (Walker) Preston.

She grew up in Brandon, where she received her early education.

On June 15, 1936, she married Marshall A. Ayer in Brandon.

She was a housewife and homemaker in her earlier years. She cared for her mother-in-law for 14 years.

She later worked in food service at Kluck's Nursing Home.

She was predeceased by her husband on June 7, 1964.

From 1979 until 1987, she lived in South Carolina, where she worked in food service at a private school.

She returned to Vermont in 1987. She belonged to Brandon Senior Citizens.

She was a member of Forest Dale Wesleyan Church, where she had taught Sunday school.

She was past president for the church missionary camp and was president of the Brandon PTA.

She loved to garden.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Robert Ayer; two brothers Aaron Preston and James Preston; a grandson; a granddaughter and a great grandson.

A private graveside committal service and burial will follow in Forestdale Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
