Nell Carolyn Redding Smith passed away peacefully at her home on November 8, 2015, at the age of 94. Born on August 14, 1921 to Lee and James Redding, Nell lived in Marion, Arkansas until her family moved to Memphis in 1932. After graduating from Central High School in 1939, she attended the University of Arkansas where she studied journalism. Nell was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and remained an active alumna for many years. After college, Nell worked at First National Bank and as a stewardess for Chicago and Southern Airways. On April 3, 1947, she married Thomas Wade Smith. They raised two daughters, and resided in Memphis until 1974 when they relocated to Columbia, South Carolina. In 1980, they moved to Jackson, Mississippi before returning to live in Germantown in 2001. Nell and Wade were charter members of Christ United Methodist Church and were active in the Kingswood Sunday School Class. Nell participated in the Salvation Army Auxillary, the Shelby County Republican Women and enjoyed her Wicklow Women's group. Her interests included playing bridge, cooking and collecting cookbooks, taking trips to the beach, and cheering for her "Hogs". In addition to her husband of 65 years and her parents, Nell was preceded death by her brother and sister-in-law James L. and Bess Redding, and her sister and brother-in–law Mary Elizabeth (Beth) and John (Jack) Fitzgerald. She leaves her daughters and their spouses, Dale and Joe Barzizza Jr. and Libba and George Barzizza. In addition, she leaves her grandchildren Amy (Randall) Hudson, Nathan Atherton, Katherine Barzizza, and Elizabeth Barzizza, as well as her great-grandchildren Randy Curtis and Rebecca Atherton. Nell also leaves her sister-in-law Margaret Smith Bence, her brother-in-law Russell Smith of Huntsville, Alabama, and many loved nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in Wilson Chapel at Christ United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the Parlor Room. Nell will be laid to rest next to Wade in Falkner, Mississippi. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Christ United Methodist Church, Salvation Army, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of their choice.
