First wife of Samuel E. Benefiel.

From the Lebanon Pioneer for Dec. 8, 1898:

Mrs. Ollie J. Benefiel died at Gallatin, Tenn., last Friday evening of consumption. The remains arrived here Saturday night on the midnight train and were taken to the residence, on Indianapolis avenue, where short but appropriate funeral services were held Sunday morning at 8 o'clock by Eld. A. J. Frank, of the Christian church. The remains were then taken to the home of her father, John C. Bowman, south of Shannondale, where at 2 o'clock Rev. Williams, pastor of the Christian church at Dover, preached a funeral sermon. The body was laid to rest at 3 o'clock in the Pisgah cemetery, near Beckville, Montgomery county. Mrs. Benefiel was born in Jefferson township, this county, thirty-five years ago, and was married to S. E. Benefiel, January, 1884. They lived on a farm near her old home until in the fall of 1892, when they moved to Lebanon, where they have since made their home. About four years ago she had a severe illness from which she recovered and enjoyed very good health until two years ago, since when she has been in declining health. About five weeks ago she went to Gallatin in the hope of benefitting her health. Her health seemed to improve by reason of the change until about a week or ten days ago, after which her health went rapidly down. She died while sitting in a chair waiting for her bed to be made up.

She leaves a husband and one child, Guy, who is eleven years of age; father, mother, two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Armstrong and Mrs. Georgia Hunt; four brothers, James A., W. H., Frank and Oliver Bowman, and a host of friends who mourn her loss. One older sister died of consumption about four years ago. Mrs. Benefiel realized that death was only a question of a short time, and had given directions as to the manner and place she should be buried. She was always cheerful and had a kindly feeling for her neighbors and friends, by whom she was held in high esteem, as shown by the large attendance at her funeral. She had been a member of the Christian church since early childhood. By her request, Guy will live with her sister, Mrs. Louisa Armstrong, of Mace. Mr. Benefiel will also furnish a room there for his own use.
