Donald "Gumpy" C. Carlson, age 84, a lifelong resident of Cloquet, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Lighthouse in Cloquet. He was born September 2, 1925 in Cloquet to Henning and Edith (Petersen) Carlson and graduated from Cloquet High School. Don served his country in the Marine Corps during WWII where he participated in action against the enemy at Saipan, Marianas Islands, Tinian, the Volcano Islands and Iwo Jima where he witnessed both raisings of the flag. He worked in the finishing room as a roll wrapper for the Potlatch Corp. retiring in 1987. Don had served as a Potlatch Union Officer and was a past president. He was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club; the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lorraine; one step-daughter, Lorrie Hagen; two brothers, Harry and Sidney "Bud" Carlson; and one sister, Maxine Armstrong. He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Paul (Candee) Carlson of Grand Rapids and Denny Carlson of Cloquet; two daughters, Linda (Jerry) Berglund of Esko and Beth (Terry) Spooner of Duluth; two step-sons, Phil Fernjack of Superior and Mike (Geri) Fernjack of Cloquet; two step-daughters, Valerie Fernjack of Duluth and Lynn (Mike) Ericksen of Farmington; one sister, Beatrice (Marvin) Nelson of North Branch, MN; grandchildren, Lori, Aaron, Matt, Carissa, Jeff, Andrew, Devon, Jenny, Scott, Amy, T.J., Dapper, Brooke, Nicole, Adam, Joey, Heather, Logan, Kiera, Connor, Lauren, Julia; great-grandchildren, Noah, Logan, Morgan, Dawson, Eli, Ava, Ahnna, Logan, Brynn, Garret, Camden, Aiden, Owen, and Wyatt; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, December 28, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Interment services will be at New Calvary Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship room of the funeral home. The family has selected Nelson Funeral Care to assist them with arrangements.
