Son of John and Catharine Tweed of Brown Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Veteran of the Civil War - Pvt. Co. I, 83 Pa. Inf.

Married Hadessa Ann BRIGGS on October 24, 1872 at Aughwick, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. John and Dessie set up housekeeping at Emporium, Cameron County, Pennsylvania where all of their children were born. From 1885 to May 1890 they lived at Punxsutawney, Jefferson Co., PA. They moved to Bellwood, Blair Co., PA in 1890.

Obituary:
J.W. TWEED
Of Bellwood died shortly after midnight yesterday morning of a general decline at the Blair County hospital. John Wesley Tweed was a son of John and Catherine Daugherty Tweed and was born near Newton Hamilton, Jan. 26, 1847. When a boy of 16, he enlisted on Feb. 28, 1863, in Company I, Eighty-third Pennsylvania volunteer infantry, and served with the Army of the Potomac for two years and four months, being discharged June 28, 1865. He reenlisted, this time in the regular army, on March 7, 1867, in Company I of the Fifteenth infantry and served until Nov. 7, 1870, chiefly on the Texas border, where indians made trouble for the troops. For a number of years Mr. Tweed was in railroad service. He was road master for the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh, and also for the Western New York and Pennsylvania before coming to Bellwood in 1889. He was piecework inspector in Bellwood division employ during the years of his residence in the town. He was a retired P.R.R. employe. Mr. Tweed was a man of sterling worth. He was a member of the United Brethren church. He also belonged to the Emporium lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and to the Ancient Order of United Workmen of Emporium. Surviving are his wife, two sons and one daughter: George of Uniontown, Herman of Charleroi and Mrs. Elmer Waton of Newport. One son, Bruce, was a typhoid victim during the Spanish-American war. Two brothers also survive: G.T. and Elmer Tweed, both of Punxsutawney. The funeral service, which will be private, will be held at the home on Main street, Bellwood, at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Interment in Logan Valley cemetery.
