WILLIAM E. "GENE" ROBERTS, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Harton
Hospital in Tullahoma, Tenn.
He was born in Castleford, Ida. on Jan. 17, 1917, to Jay Palmer and Sue (Sisco)
Roberts.

In 1918, the family moved to Conner, Ark., where Gene's grandfather had a store and
was postmaster. (The post office is on display in the Carroll County Historical
Museum in Berryville). Gene grew up in the communities of Conner, Clifty, Piney and
Rudd, where his father farmed and taught school.

Gene was a farmer and married Mary Frances Russell of Grandview on Feb. 5, 1938. In
1944, he and his wife and two daughters moved to California, where he worked in
farming in the Salinas and Santa Clara Valleys, eventually settling in Hollister.

For many years, and until his retirement, he was ranch superintendent for Castle
Farms and Seed Co. He handled the farming operations of more than 2,000 acres in
Hollister, the San Joaquin Valley and Mexico. His position required numerous trips to
Mexico and South American for seed and farming consultations.

Upon his retirement and after 36 years in California, they returned to Arkansas in
1980 and purchased a home in Green Forest. He soon started volunteering part-time for
the Carroll County Historical Society. This interest led to compiling information and
applying for civil war markers for veterans' graves. Eventually, he placed 140
markers in 55 cemeteries -- a remarkable accomplishment. He enjoyed retirement in
Arkansas for 15 years until illness required they move closer to their daughter in
Tullahoma, Tenn. in 1995.

On Dec. 17, 2000, his wife of 62 years died. He had resided at the Lynchburg Nursing
Center for the past two years.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Webb, and
three brothers, Keith, John and David Roberts. His survivors include a daughter and
son-in-law, Joyce and Sheldon Glick of Tullahoma; a brother, J.C. Roberts of
Gardnerville, Nev.; three grandchildren, Dr. Kim Glick Melton and husband Mike, Kurt
Glick and wife Carla, all of Tullahoma, Heidi Clark and husband Rick of Mt. Vernon,
Mo.; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

A memorial service for both Gene and Mary Roberts will be held on Jan. 17, 2004, at 1
p.m. at the Gobbler Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation
be made to the Carroll County Historical Society.
