"The Hagerstown (IN) Exponent, Thursday, Feb. 25, 1904
John Copeland, Sr., died at the home of his son, Sol, in Hagerstown, Monday morning, aged 91 years. Funeral service and burial this morning, service by Revs. Lewis and Otis. Deceased leaves, to mourn his death, many friends, no enemies, and ten children--Mrs. Kendall, Mrs. Shultz, and A. Copeland, of Logansport; Samuel Copeland, Dublin; John Copeland, Stranguhs; Sol. Copeland, Hagerstown, Mrs. Knoth, Muncie; Mrs. John Staum, Indianapolis; Mrs. Lewis Staum, Hagerstown; Joseph Copeland, at the home farm. Also, 36 grand children, 38 great grand children, and one great, great grand child. Deceased had lived at his late home forty years. He came to this county from Rockingham Co., Va., with his wife and two children, in a two-horse wagon. Two years after his arrival he returned to Virginia in a wagon, and soon returned with his mother, both in a wagon, a distance of 500 miles. He leaves a considerable estate, his home farm alone covering a tract of 252 acres."
