He was born near Athens on March 17, 1913, the son of John and Nellie McGary Ferguson. He farmed for many years in Menard County and retired from the state Department of Transportation in 1988. He was a member of Teamsters Local 916. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Dixie; four brothers; five sisters; and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife, Clara; one son, Russell of Springfield; three daughters, Bonnie Newman of Oakford, Janet Lyons and Marsha Levitt, both of Springfield; one stepson, John Vaught of Springfield; two sisters, Maxine Geary of Cantrall and Sylvia Hayden of Athens; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
