Martin was the son of Alfred Leroy Trowbridge and Catharine Schroeder, who married on 24 Feb 1875 in Marshall Co., Indiana. Leroy and Catharine had four children together—Velma "Nellie" (Dec 1875), Martin (4 Nov 1881), Susan "Susie" B. (Mar 1884), and an unknown child (likely born circa 1878) who was already out on his or her own by 1900, and who died before 1910.

I found the family on the 1880 Census, living in Plymouth's North Township in Marshall County. Leroy, aged 29, was farming. Catharine, aged 28, was home with daughter Nellie, aged 4.

If the 1890 Census were still among us, I would have been able to get the name of that unknown child. Sadly, Leroy would die before the 1900 Census, passing on 30 Jan 1894. Some of the items listed on Leroy's will were two horses, six pigs, thirty chickens, two cows, a bob sleigh, a wagon, ten bushels of potatoes and eight bushels of oats. Catharine was left with an estate worth about three hundred dollars.

Unfortunately, Leroy did not live long enough to see daughter Nellie marry William Guy Baker on 3 Nov 1895 in Marshall County.

I was able to catch up with the family on the 1900 Census, still living in Plymouth. Head of household was Catharine Trowbridge, widowed, aged 48. She reported that she had had four children, and that all four were still living. At home with her were Martin, aged 18 and was doing day labor, and Susie, aged 16. To help make ends meet, Catharine had taken in a boarder, 43-year-old Clarence P. Juvenal.

When the 1910 Census came around, the family was renting at 421 Miner St. in Plymouth. Catharine, aged 48, again reported that she had had four children, but that only three were still among the living. Still at home with their mother were Martin, aged 28 and working as a painter, and daughter Susie, aged 26 and working as a saleslady in a dry goods store. Also living in the home was 11-year-old John W. Siden, noted as a boarder with his "own income".

A few months after that census, Martin married wife Cassie Anna Kizer on 2 Oct 1910 in Marshall County. On 18 Sep 1911, they welcomed their only child, daughter Julia Pauline, while they were still living in Indiana.

On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI draft card, Martin, aged 36, reported that he was living in Berkshire, Tioga Co., New York, and that he was farming. Wife Cassie Anna was noted as next of kin. He was described as being of medium height, and of stout build, with gray eyes and dark brown hair.

I found Martin and Anna (seemed to prefer) on the 1920 Census, living in Caroline, Tompkins Co., New York. Martin, aged 37, was in fact farming. Anna, aged 29, was home with 8-year-old daughter Julia.

Eight years after that census, Martin lost his mother Catharine in 1928. She was about 77 years old.

By the time the 1930 Census came around, the family had moved back to Indiana, and were living at 430 Pennsylvania Ave. in Plymouth. Martin, aged 48, had found a job as the foreman of a metal works. Anna, aged 39, was keeping house. Home with her was daughter Julia, aged 18.

The family was still living in Plymouth when the 1940 Census came around. Martin, aged 58, was an engineer/fireman. Anna, aged 49, and Julia, aged 28, were tending to things at home.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII card, Martin, aged 60, reported that he was living at the 430 Pennsylvania Ave. address in Plymouth, and that he was working for McCord Radiator Co. in Plymouth. Daughter Julia was noted as the person who would always know his address. Martin measured in at 5" 7 ½" tall, and weighed in at 205 lbs. His eyes were noted as blue instead of gray, but his brown hair was by then gray.

On 2 Oct 1960, Martin and Anna would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Martin died sometime that same year at age 78 or 79. Anna only lived another four years without her helpmate and companion, departing this earth in 1964 at age 73 or 74. Both were laid to rest next Martin's parents. When Martin and Anna's daughter Julia died in 1981, she was laid to rest next to her father.
